SharePoint is a web application platform, which combines numerous applications such as intranet, extranet, content management, document management, and personal cloud. Microsoft provides two options: SharePoint Online (cloud solution that you get with an Office 365 subscription or by itself) and SharePoint Server (on-premises solution). In SharePoint Server 2013, and only on that version, a free solution (SharePoint Foundation) was also available. Traditionally, Microsoft planned SharePoint as application especially for mid-sized companies or big departments but due to its publication with Microsoft Office 365 it became widely used by small enterprises.
